TITLE: the solo making process
A mental script for the initial making of a solo:
SCENE ONE:
Main character is alone in a dance studio, music is playing in the background (the writer recommends Motown).
I need a movement
*does a move*
How about this?
No.
No, I always do that.
Okay, something else…
*does a move*
How about this?
No. I don’t wanna do that.
*does a move*
Okay, how about this?
No, that’s not right either
Okay, well I’m just going to improvise for a bit, maybe something will come to me.
*improvises*
Stop, go back to that move.
Okay this could work.
*repeats move*
Alright, what could I do after this?
*does a move*
This?
No.
*does a move*
This?
No.
*does a move*
This?
Alright this could work.
*does first two movements*
Yeah, alright we’re getting somewhere.
How about I whack this move in?
*does move*
Good… good! What next?
*tries several different moves*
Hmm, none of this works
Maybe if I put something before the first move
No.
Okay I don’t even like this anymore.
I’m scrapping it.
Alright, back to the beginning- I need a move.
*stands hopelessly for five minutes*
Maybe I should close the curtains. Maybe that will help.
But then I don’t know what anything will look like.
*curtains remain open*
*repeats original movements*
Yeah I still hate this.
This is fucking awful, why can’t I come up with anything. I am shit.
*walks and plays on phone for ten minutes*
Maybe if I had music then it would be much easier… but I don’t have any music.
Okay let’s just put on some funky tunes and see what happens
*changes song and bops to music for a little while*
Nope.
Nothing productive is happening.
*turns off music*
I’m out of here. I’ll do it tomorrow.
*exit studio*
[Scene one is repeated at least two more times, until a small amount of material is generated.]
